on streymoy, the largest of the faroe islands, there is a winding mountain road that stretches from tórshavn to the northern villages. it’s called oyggjarvegurin — ‘the island road.’

for many young people in the faroes, driving on oyggjarvegurin is a rite of passage of sorts. late at night, with no streetlights, no houses, and no one to slow you down, the road becomes something else entirely.
